    Personal development has been derived from the Latin word Persona which means a mask or a veil. The English word is equivalent to false visage. Just like an artist wears a mask of a character that he/she is playing. Therefore, this persona is that aspect of our character which we present in front of others. However, consider that it has nothing to do with a person's internal qualities. For an ordinary person, the general view of personal development is portrayed by decent attires, impressive looks, amassed social virtues, a combination of id, ego, and superego. However, psychology does not define personal development having these characteristics. Moreover, personal development is a social event that cannot be studied excluding social context. For example, a person's personality is reckoned based on the impact he/she leaves on others. What others think of a person, explains his personality. The ideas a person has, the way a person succeeds in influencing others, decisions a person takes in situations, he/she is considered as a person having a good personality. Therefore, personality is a social stimulus value. Psychologists like Allport, James, Drever, and Bert have defined it as the process which involves a psychosocial system which determines the different actions a person performs. To understand it better, let us look at the various components of Personal Development. Additionally, ordinary beings often confuse development with growth. For instance, they interchange personal development with physical growth. Although growth is part of development, growth is measured in quantitative terms. Development, on the other hand, is both a quantitative and a qualitative process. Physical growth relates to the increase in body, mass, weight, and the height of the person. Physical growth starts at infancy and stops at maturation. However, development goes on until life ends. Taking an example here, a human being can take lessons on corporate behavior to improve personality according to his needs, but he/she cannot increase or decrease height as needed. The traits of personal development include mental, social, emotional development pertaining to the disposition of a being. These traits differentiate one person from the other. A) Mental Development: Mental development is also called intellectual development. Every emotion displays a change in behavior like love, care, laughing, crying, smiling, etc. These emotions can be positive or negative. These emotions define our strengths and weaknesses. A person who can control his/her emotions is likely to have a better development of personality. Factors affecting Emotional Development ● Environment of school/university ● Family and neighborhood ● Health and physical development ● Intellectual efficiency ● Age and fatigue ● Social development ● Behavioral problems C) Social Development: A person who is born as a piece of flesh and bone learns to become a man or woman by socializing through active participation in society. He/she acquires language, qualities of compensation, adjustment, judgement, responsibility, maturity, co-operations, and culture. His/her horizon expands and becomes an educated being. This is the process of social adaptation.     A human brain is more unpredictable that one can envision and whatever that is causing you mental health should be cause for concern, so do not take it casually, as this is your life and it only comes around once upon a time! Regrettably, many citizens have plunged into depression/anxiety due to a lot of factors such as the global pandemic or any other fear like bullying, financial situation, rejected by society, loneliness or struggling to find a job opportunity. Many individuals end up in so much depression that they opt for any of the following measures: Committing suicide, Self-inflict injuries by cutting or burning themselves, Get addicted to drugs and other substances that harm their body, End up having health concerns or relationship dilemmas. I know being in depression can be a “pain in the ass” but in this vigorous era it is every citizens obligation to support the ones in need whether the individual is your friend, colleague, family member or an acquaintance or even a stranger! Remember, such feelings or thoughts are transitory, and it will pass by. Since not everyone can confide in friends or family due to confidentiality; there are other alternatives such as counselling with a psychologist so they can understand your current state of mind. You never know what someone is going through or what is on their mind, so please be kind-hearted as it is not easy to be in their shoes!   • Workplace Sexual Harassment: Stop It NOW!

    Sexual Harassment is the most common harassment that people face in the workplace. Workplace Sexual Harassment is one of the most upcoming issues that has been brought to light by the #Metoo drive. Workplace Sexual Harassment includes any kind of sexual advances made by colleagues, seniors, and any work acquaintances. Any unwanted jokes, gestures, contact, and repeated requests for dates; are a part of Sexual Harassment. When bad behavior goes unnoticed at the workplace it can create a hostile and intimidating work environment that impacts the productivity of employees at the workplace. Workplace Sexual Harassment is not limited to Women but also includes Men, people from the LGBTQ+ community, and people from different backgrounds. Reports suggest that most reported cases are by women, but this does not suggest that bad behavior should be tolerated at the workplace. So, what can you do to combat sexual harassment at the workplace? We might have some answers that can be helpful in such situations. 1. Document clear policies about sexual harassment The employee handbook should have clear and transparent policies as to what accounts as sexual harassment and what measures to take it such instances occur. If any employee experiences such incidents, then what steps should be followed to file a complaint. State a zero-tolerance policy for the person responsible. Investigate the complaint filed by the employee without bias or favoritism. Retaliation against any employee filing complaints shall not be tolerated. Policies should also be re-examined after certain periods to keep up to date with new applicable laws. 2. Spreading Rumors and Complaints seriously Any employee experiencing sexual harassment at the workplace is always afraid of losing their jobs. It is the responsibility of the management to acknowledge any rumors seriously and contact the employee. If any employee files a complaint, then the complaint should be taken seriously by the management so that others who might have experienced the same thing can also come forward to talk about it. 3. Give reporting preferences to employees Mostly the employees are afraid to speak about sexual harassment openly, in this case providing different reporting preferences is necessary. Creating a safe space for employees to talk about it is important. Giving the preference for filing a complaint through emails or other reliable mode is important so that the employees feel safe talking about it. 4. Enforce Law at Every Level The punishments and zero tolerance should not be limited to middle management employees but also the employees at senior positions. Abuse of power by such employees should not be ignored and the punishments should be just as severe. 5. Empower employees and follow up Even after the legal obligation is completed management should follow up by asking how the matter was handled and what they can do to make these matters better. Empower other employees as well to speak up in future cases. 6. Training employees across all levels of the organization An organization should conduct training sessions for employees at least twice a year. Such sessions should teach employees about what sexual harassment is, how it is going to be addressed, complaint procedures and encouraging employees how to handle such complaints along with their supervisors and managers. 7. Lead the way A culture change is only effective when there is a two-way approach not only a top bottom but vice versa. Leaders play an important role in such situations as they can end such harassment when they witness it. A great example would be when during a town hall meeting an inappropriate comment is passed by a colleague. As a leader of the organization, the CEO witnesses this behavior and addresses the individual to apologize instantly as well as issues a stern announcement by reminding others how this does not reflect the organizations value. 8. Take counsel from your friends and family Discussing this abuse with people that are close to you such as family members, colleagues, and friends can give you much-needed support so that loneliness can be avoided and support the company to investigate the matter. If you witness a situation, ensure that you discuss the matter and help to encourage them to take the necessary actions to put an end to the situation before it deteriorates. Whether you are in school, university or at work, questioning allegations, prejudices and stereotypes is an excellent way to let individuals know that it is not nice to be racist. Often folks will unconsciously make statements that appear racist. Standing up to such remarks can be a perfect way for people to think about the negative effect they have. Presently around the globe we are witnessing everybody raising their voice of the heartbreaking moment that was witnessed in United States in the past week which is an eye-opener for all communities all over the globe. When you stand up for yourself or anyone, it is a good idea to handle the situation as calmly as you can and to make sure you feel safe first. Being able to hold discussions about discrimination and racism provides room for dialogue and change while going straight into a hollering match which typically is counterproductive. If you are experiencing discrimination or racism, finding a way to fight back is encouraging and positive. It can reduce the feeling of depression or helplessness and give a positive outlet to frustration and anger. It will look different for other people in different situations. You could use humor to challenge an offensive statement with a group of friends; get involved in a political or activist cause; or get involved in online discussions or offer a different opinion in a group discussion. It can be extremely overwhelming to talk about discrimination and racism, particularly in a situation where you do not want to cause trouble. You need to feel confident in sharing your thoughts in a way that suits you. Be sure you put your protection first, remain calm, and consider your own beliefs and principles before you move in to support others. The following factors can help you in Speaking up against discrimination and racism. Discuss It with Family and Friends This is a perfect way to get stuff off your chest and enables you to understand what you are happy with. Your loved ones will also motivate you to realize that you are not alone. Reading Everything about Discrimination and Racism Understanding the context and effect of discrimination and racism will open the door to finding all ways to combat racist behavior. Start searching online for posts, videos, and blogs about people's perspectives from a range of backgrounds. Joining a United Collective or Civic Group Promoting multiculturalism and fighting discrimination and racism is a perfect way to learn about and act against discrimination. It could make you feel like you are not essential or that you do not fit in. You may feel sad, upset, or frustrated. You may be influenced even though it is not directed at you, as if you are hearing someone discriminated against someone's culture. Setting Limitations One cannot control others, but they can certainly have a say so that individuals are aware that such behavior is not tolerable. Remember change takes time and in small steps and not large ones. Integrating or partaking in any sort of criminal behaviors such as violence, looting, slaughtering to combat this situation is not deemed appropriate as it only exacerbates the problem. How to discover or develop an Ally When one is frustrated against such intolerant situations, one must seek out like minded individuals so they can seek support in whatever ways they can. One you have received a favor from an individual do not forget to return the favor back or vice versa. Lead by example so that you inspire others to follow you. One should always speak up against such chauvinism and not be silenced by fear! Racism and discrimination tend to be a part of life for many college students. Sometimes, racism is evident, such as the use of racial stereotypes, graffiti, or even violence. However, it can also often occur in more subtle forms, such as stereotyping, assumptions, or exclusion. In any way, racism and discrimination add stress and challenge to the lives of people of color. We must consider that everyone has the right to be treated equally irrespective of colour, race, religion, gender, ethnicity, origin, and belief. How should one try to calm the anxious employees? We might have some answers to these questions. Here are some tips for HR professionals to follow in chaotic times. Change Management Communication is the key if the organization is going through some major changes. There can be rumors or false information circulating in the organization.
